Welcome to the Bert Church Drama Department

Equipped with a state-of-the-art theatre, the Bert Church High School Drama Program proudly produces a musical and a play every school year. An upwards of 60 students ranging in musical, dramatic, artistic, logistic, and athletic talents are involved in our shows and we do everything we can to ensure that a meaningful learning experience is had by the presentation of our productions.

Through our shows, students gain a deeper appreciation for theatre as a whole as they are required to participate in set, costume, and prop builds, scenic painting, lighting design, make-up deisng, and various front-of-house duties. They also have access to voice and dance training (as needed) and vocal and movement-based workshops.

We support our students as best we can and tailor all the learning to the current show so that the learning is relatable and immediately useful.

Auditions for the winter show happen during the June exam break for the next school year. Auditions for the spring show occur during the January exam break. All students of various talents, strengths, and capacities are encouraged to try-out!

Students who are cast in the musical may wish to enroll in Performing Arts 15, 25, or 35 (each class is a prerequisite for continuation). This class provides a structured curriculum to the student requiring assignments on top of rehearsal times and counts for 5 high school credits*.

*Performing Arts 15, 25, and 35 are all locally-developed courses that earn 5 high school credits. Please note that most post-secondary institutions will not consider Performing Arts 35 for admission, which is why we encourage our actors to participate in Drama 10, 20, and eventually 30.
