Welcome to Mr. Lowry's Homepage
Salutations!
It has been an amazing summer but it is now the time to begin the 2023-2024 school year, and we do so with much excitement! This is my second year as a Social Studies teacher at Bert Church High School and I am loving it so far! I have a Bachelors Degree in Arts (International Relations) and a Bachelors Degree in Education from the University of Calgary. When I am not in the classroom at BCHS, I enjoy getting to work with our students in some of their extracurriculars, such as basketball and football where I help to coach and manage both teams. This year, I have the privilege of teaching every grade (Social 9, 10-1, 20-1, 20-2, and 30-2).
One important part of my teaching philosophy that I always communicate to students and the adults in their lives is that relationship building in my classroom is very important. It is my belief that students learn best when they are comfortable enough to be confident and that is something I strive for in my classroom.
In Social 9, we learn about the different functions of the Canadian government, Canadian rights, immigration, the YCJA, among many other interesting topics. In Social 10, we expand our focus by learning about globalization and how trade and technology have made the world into a more connected and interdependent place. Social 20 and 30 are some of my favourite courses to teach because they provide our students with important information that will contribute to them becoming well-informed citizens in our society. In Social 20, the course is centred around nationalism. We examine how nations are formed and dive into historical examples where nationalism led to some of our world’s greatest revolutions and wars, as well as more contemporary examples closer to the present day. In Social 30, students learn about competing ideologies that exist around the world, such as individualism, liberalism, common good and collectivism. As students learn and study different ideological perspectives, not only will they become better critical thinkers, but also more tolerant, understanding and engaged members of society.
