Social 9 - Issues for Canadians
Social Studies 9 studies the organization of government in Canada. This includes a look at how we elect or appoint members of government to the various branches, and what their responsibilities are as members of government. A big part of government is the creation of laws to maintain a just society, so we will learn about the Youth Criminal Justice Act, as well as laws that impact immigration. The government also plays a role in economics, so we will compare Canada’s economy to the United States, as well as exploring what our role is as consumers and how this impacts quality of life.
Course Outline
Both parents and students are encouraged to read through the course outline to ensure they understand the expectations of the class. This is especially important as this is a flipped classroom (see below for details).

Bonus Project
This assignment is available to all students at any time. They must set up an appointment with the teacher to discuss how they will approach the project and set some deadlines.

The Flipped Classroom
One approach we are taking in this classroom is to have the key ideas that used to be part of the class lecture now put into video format that students will watch for homework, and we will work on projects during class time - so we call it a flipped classroom. Students are expected to watch these videos when assigned (there are about two dozen of them to watch throughout the year) and parents are encouraged to watch them with their student. A schedule of upcoming videos will be given at the beginning of each unit.
