Welcome from Ms. M. Cumberland

“With an education you all have everything you need to rise above all of the noise and fulfill  every last one of your dreams.” ~ Michelle Obama

  • I believe that every student can and wants to learn and succeed, and that to teach is to respect diversity and to nurture intellectual growth and risk taking.

  • I believe that the classroom should provide a safe and caring learning environment, both physically and emotionally. The curriculum should challenge students and reflect high standards.

  • I believe that the central focus in schools should be on students and learning. Students need to have mastery of core content knowledge, the confidence to handle setbacks, and the creative and social wherewithal to develop solutions when problems emerge.

  • I believe that it is our job as educators to ensure that students acquire 21st -century skills, while also diversifying the ways in which such knowledge and skills are acquired and assessed. Today’s classroom should be inclusive. It should encompass a cooperative group with multiple levels of learners who are all benefitting from each other’s strengths.

My name is Mrs. Marie Cumberland, and I am very excited to be on the Bert Church High School Admin team this year.  I am entering my 33rd year in the teaching profession and my 10th year with Rocky View Schools. Although my educational focus was originally in Special Education and Math, over the years I have taught everything from adult education, ELL, and high school math, to grades 4-9. I have spent the past 10 years teaching at the middle and high school levels in the Learning Support and Math Departments.

At Bert Church, my Admin responsibilities include:

  • Supporting teachers in the Humanities Departments, both English and Social Studies

  • Provincial Achievment Test organization

  • Graduation

  • Supporting Grade 9 students and Grade 12 students with last names from J-Q

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.  My door is open…
