From the Principal's Desk
by Ryan Reed

Hi Everyone,

With Semester 1 in our rear view mirror, we get the opportunity to start fresh in most of our courses for Semester 2 on Monday. New starts give us the opportunity for new goals and rhythms. We are excited to see what might come of this over the next few months.

A couple of reminders heading into Semester 2. Course changes will be done at the Admin Wall on Monday and Tuesday until we get through all grades. Complex changes requiring maneuvering of timetables will be referred to our school counsellors. Gr. 12 students will be handled first to prioritize those students needing courses to graduate. After the first week is over, any course change that would be made would have to be exceptional in nature. We want our students in their schedule and engaged in their new courses as quickly as possible.

Students will start their day on Monday with Teacher Advisory to go over their individual schedules and ask any questions for Semester 2 startup. If students would like a paper copy of their schedule, they are encouraged to bring one from home as we will not be printing 1100 student schedules for Monday. The majority of students I see interact with PowerSchool on their phones.

Thanks for your support through the first semester!

Have a great weekend,

Ryan
So, you wrote your first set of diplomas. Now what? For important diploma information, please read below.

How will results from diploma exams be shared with students?

Approximately 3 weeks after the administration of diploma exams, student results are available on myPass at https://public.education.alberta.ca/PASI/myPass/welcome

For assistance with myPass, contact the Workforce Development Help Desk at 780-427-5318 (Dial 310-0000 to be connected toll-free from outside the Edmonton area.)

Rewriting a diploma exam (deadline for April rewrite is February 21 - deadline for June rewrite is April 9th)

Students must pay a fee and register to rewrite a diploma exam. If a diploma exam has two components, students must rewrite both components of the diploma exam. All marks are reported on the student’s academic record but only the highest diploma exam mark will be reported on the student’s transcript. Students register to rewrite an exam by logging into myPass and selecting the diploma exam button. For April rewrite the school offering the exam is Airdrie Learning Connection 0404 and the Principal giving permission is Mr. Murray Arnold

Rewrite fee For Alberta-resident students there is a non-refundable, non-transferable administration fee of $26.25 (GST included) for each diploma exam re-written.

Rescoring a diploma exam

A diploma exam rescore is a request to have the diploma exam remarked at Alberta Education. The previous marks are deleted and the diploma exam is remarked by teachers without knowledge of the original marks. For the written component all assignments are remarked. For all rescores the rescore mark is the final diploma exam mark for that particular diploma exam whether the mark is raised, lowered or remains the same. Rescore requests must be submitted before the deadline using myPass. Rescore requests will be denied if the examinee fails to: • Submit payment • Sign the Declaration

Rescore fee

There is a non-transferable administration fee of $26.25 (GST included) for each diploma exam rescored. Rescore fees are refunded if the diploma exam mark increases by 5% or more as a result of rescoring.

Congratulations to BCHS students Kai S (grade 10) and Sydney D (grade 11) for both making it past the first round in the short story contest, while Maija J (grade 9) has made it past the first round in the poetry contest. We are proud of our writers and their exceptional work!

Thanks to Ms. Tschritter, our front office has a new look. Student art is showcased for guests and students to see when they come through our doors. Thanks for your effort with this Ms. Tschritter!

Returning books is at times a difficult task.  Our gr. 9 students deserve some praise for being the best grade in returning their textbooks from Semester 1! Currently there are 1054 outstanding books heading into semester 2. A reminder to students that new texts will not be issued till the Semester 1 resources are returned.

UCalgary Next Steps
Course registration does not begin until May, but for high school students who have recently accepted an offer of admission from the University of Calgary, they may be getting excited about their next steps.
This year, we are sending monthly post-admission communications to all students who have accepted their offer of admission and paid their admission deposit to ensure they are kept informed of their next steps and can begin planning for course registration early.
Here are some highlights from the January communication:
  • Spotlight on resources: students are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the University Calendar and make a wish list of the 200-level courses that interest them.  Upcoming editions of the e-newsletter will guide students through understanding the required (and option) courses for their chosen program and how their course wish list can help them in this process.  This will be helpful when the schedule launches March 1 and they need to begin thinking about building a course schedule for May registration.
  • Workshops & Webinars: We are planning a series of registration-focused in-person workshops and online webinars in March and April so students can become familiar with the tools and resources they will need to register successfully.  Dates and registration information will be shared with admitted students in their monthly e-newsletter and the coming editions of the counsellor newsletter, so stay tuned.

Don’t Hope for a Scholarship ~ Plan for a Scholarship
January Scholarship Tip
January Scholarship Tip- This tip is from MacLeans magazine article:  How to get a university scholarship: six tips for success:  “It pays to start looking early and widely for financial support”.    by Kat Tancock   Dec 29, 2017

Highlight your strengths
While academic merit is the primary criterion, awards committees are looking for well-rounded students, too—and it’s not just about a resumé that checks all the boxes. Usually there’s a point system used to score applications, Nolt says, and longer-term activities tend to have more weight than one-offs. She reminds students not to discount things they do that might seem banal but actually reveal responsibility and maturity. “I was recently reading applications from students who were really involved in 4-H,” she says. “They forgot to mention they were also responsible for getting up in the morning and making sure the cows were milked.”
