From the Principal's Desk
by Ryan Reed

This week showcased a wonderful event at our school with the first band concert of the year. Over 200 of our students are enrolled in a music program and the talent on display was evident.

Our world is certainly changing and much of it is becoming more digitized (you're probably reading this on your phone). As we race to try to stay one step ahead of machine learning, we often forget the softer skills in life. Something that differentiates humans from machines is their appreciation for the arts. As we become more reliant on technology for our everyday functioning, we cannot forget the arts. I would argue they become even more important.

Watching students connecting with their passions in fine arts at Bert Church is inspiring. This week we got to see those in music on display. Everyday we get to see artists, performers, photographers, and more create wonderful designs through their work. We are grateful for the people who invest in our students in the arts and look forward to more impressive performances in the future.

Have a great weekend,

Ryan

Share a Photograph of a Military Family Member to Help Us Commemorate Remembrance Day

To emphasize the impact Remembrance Day has on many of our students, we would like to display digital photographs of Bert Church students' family members who have served or are currently serving in the military during our Remembrance Day Assembly. If you would like to participate, please send in a photograph of a family member along with their name and/or title and the name(s) of your student(s) at Bert Church High School.

Please send this information to alicelthwaites@rvschools.ab.ca no later than November 1st.

Ms. Williams’ grade 9 and 10 classes engaged in the CIVIX course to better understand how modern democracy works in Canada and the role media plays in the system. Every Social Studies class participated in the vote and our students cast almost 400 ballots and, much like the real riding, the Conservatives won (with 50% of the vote).
Our band had their first performance of the year on Wednesday night and it was awesome. So many kids filled the stage and performed for a packed house. Thank you to Mr. Dorner (Happy Birthday by the way) for your leadership with our band program.
The Sr. Girls volleyball team played to a full house on Wednesday night against the Mustangs from George McDougall. The entertaining match saw many lead changes but ultimately the girls dropped the game 3 sets to 0. The loss puts the Chargers in 6th in the league with playoffs around the corner. Thanks to Ms. Marner on her leadership with the girls this year!
If you don't have your Little Mermaid tickets yet, go to the following website. Our kids are hard at work, perfecting their moves, learning their lines, and working together to make it a great show!
Willem and Chayson were our two representatives at provincials in cross country this year. Both of them did quite well. It was a very large field of competition and probably the most challenging course that I've seen at this level of running. Congrats to the kids for making it and thanks to Mr. Smith for leading the team this year!
Photography students were at it again while studying reflection this week. Creative approaches to taking photos led to some stunning results!
This week in football news, our Chargers team narrowly defeated the strong Sprinbank Phoenix football squad 17-16 last Friday night. Below is the winning catch, captured in 3 parts, by Blaise Newberry. The Chargers came back from 1 15 point deficit late in the game to steal the win. Next up? Cochrane this Saturday for RVSA gold at 1:00 PM. See you there!
