From the Principal's Desk
by Ryan Reed

This week we saw a handful of our students head to Abbotsford for the annual Canadian Student Leadership Conference (CSLC). A big thanks to Mr. Jones for his dedication to student leadership.

A terrific aspect of student leadership is many events in schools are thought of, planned, and run by students. When kids have their peers getting behind events, participation is much better. As parents, you know the feeling when you have a great idea that your kids will love but the only reason they're not into it is it came from an adult? That is what we deal with a lot at the school level. Insert student leaders. By understanding and being more responsive to what kids actually would like at school, student leadership can impact the feel and culture of a school immensely.

We value our student leaders, whether they are in leadership or not, and know that our school is only as good as the people who walk the halls everyday.

Thanks to those who continue to make BCHS a great place to be.

Have a great weekend

Ryan

Some of our leadership students happily participated in the Canadian Student Leadership Conference in Abbotsford. The event allows students to meet other kids from all over the country and listen to great speakers like retired general Romeo Dallaire. Thanks to the kids for participating and Mr. Jones for heading out west with them.
Collaborate - work jointly on an activity, especially to produce or create something. (verb)

Our Math 30-2 students were putting the collective knowledge of the room to good use as they collaboratively problem solved this week. Great to see kids working together to solve complex problems. Thanks for sharing Ms. Stachniak!
Chargers football remained undefeated with a hard fought 39-6 victory over the WH Croxford Cavaliers. The Chargers were strong in all 3 phases of the game leading to a victory. The team is 4-0 in league play with a points for/points against of 204 - 15. Congrats to Coach Larsen & Bates as well as the whole staff and kids. A great start to the season.

The Blue and Gold next take the field against a strong opponent in Springbank on Friday, Oct 4th at 4:00 PM in Springbank.
Orange Shirt Day honours the legacy of the 2013 St. Joseph Mission Residential School commemoration event, held in Williams Lake, B.C. It grew out of former student, Phyllis Webstad’s account of having her brand-new orange shirt taken away on her first day of school. Wearing an Orange Shirt is meant to recognize the harm done to Residential School Survivors, and show a commitment to the principle that Every Child Matters.

To show support for this cause feel free to wear an orange shirt on Monday, Sep 30th!
Hands on learning continues to connect theory with practice in Ms. King's chemistry class. These 12th graders were busy working with polymers (the base for many plastics and resins) and esters (Turning very smelly carboxylic acids and alcohols (which smell like parmesan cheese and salt and vinegar chips) into beautiful esters such as Cherry, Pineapple, Wintergreen and Banana.

You may note the proper 'wafting' technique students use to smell chemicals that keeps them safe.
Exothermic and Endothermic reactions were investigated in Science 10 this week has students completed lab worth. Exothermic means energy is released while Endothermic means energy is absorbed. For example, raising teenagers would classify as an exothermic process (just checking if you're still reading).
Mr. Goodyear is showing off his thrifty side with the drama program. Not only is he collecting hole punches for confetti (very clever) he is running a great fundraiser. Our community has until Oct 5th to donate as many bags of clothes as possible to support Value Village and the drama program at Bert Church. This 'green' initiative not only raises funds for our school but also allows you to get rid of some clothes you don't need anymore. Stop in at the office if you have a donation and we'll make sure it gets where it needs to go!
