Principal's Message
Good Morning,
I hope you have had a good week and are looking forward to your weekend. We have a few updates from the school so please read below!
1. Student Registration Processes
We were able to spend the past two days helping students register for the 2021.22 school year in the learning commons. A big thanks to Mr. Castiglione, Mrs. Allan, and Mrs. McNevin for their hard word getting us ready to register.
We will be tracking down any student who has not registered on PowerSchool prior to breaking next Friday to ensure we have accurate data. Thanks for your help getting this done!
2. Summer School Registration
For students interested in registering for Summer School through Rocky View Schools, enrolment began on Tuesday, March 9th. To register, contact your grade level counsellor (gr. 10/12 - Ms. Quinlan, Gr. 11, Ms. Tiemstra).
- Registration for summer school begins on March 9th but the courses do not open till Monday, April 12th, the first day back from spring break.
- Students may sign up for a maximum of 1 - 5 credit course AND 1 - 3 credit course
- For more information on summer school please contact Ms. Quinlan (gr. 10/12) or Ms. Tiemstra (gr. 11)
3. Accountability Pillar Survey
Parents and Students in gr. 10 will be participating in the Accountability Survey from Alberta Education in the weeks to come. Parents, your Random Access Code will come in the mail starting March 25th. The more parents who participate, the better the data and feedback for our school. We look forward to analyzing these results!
4. Student Fee Collection
As of February 28th, 2021, all school fees are now due. Please go to this link to either register or login to access your account. For detailed information go to the BCHS web page under "Our School", "School Fees" to learn more about fee payment options and eligibility of fee waivers.
Please contact Mrs. Twomey at ctwomey@rockyview.ab.ca or call 403 948 3800 ext 7006 if you have any questions or concerns relating to your account or require a copy of your invoice. We appreciate your prompt attention to submitting fees.
5. Infinity Scarf Messaging - RVS
Rocky View Schools has asked us to send out some updated messaging on students and staff wearing infinity scarves to school. For those who do not know what an infinity scarf is, please see the image below.
Rocky View Schools is committed to providing a safe learning environment for our students. After receiving feedback on RVS’ recent decision to prevent the wearing of infinity scarves on school property due to potential safety risks, the division will discourage these scarves but not eliminate them. Our main concern with the infinity scarf is that they are loose-fitting material wrapped around the neck that will not break away if they get caught on something. We thank you for continuing to work with us to keep our students safe.
If you have any questions or thoughts on this, please direct them to RVS at 403 945 4000.
6. COVID-19 Update
I think we all prepared mentally for a longer winter with an anticipated 2nd wave of the pandemic which started to escalate in October and peaked in December/January. What we may not have been preparing for is the possibility of a 3rd wave, which it appears we are at the beginning of now. With vaccinations starting to pick up and the weather (hopefully) starting to warm again soon, we were hopeful this could be avoided.
As of today, there are 108 active cases in Airdrie, which has risen by around 40-50 in one week's time. As a comparison, in November we had around 400 at one point. While we are not where we were then, it does appear that our numbers are not going in the right direction.
What this means for us at school is there is a higher likelihood of one of students or staff contracting the virus. We are continuing to work with kids on the protocols at schools through supervision and reminders but we should also be mentally preparing for quarantining and learning from home. A couple things to remember:
- if your child does not have a device that is reliable to learn from home, we can loan them out long term from our learning commons. Please see us in the office to get the process started. Not having a device is detrimental to learning continuity
- stay home if you're not well, practice good hand hygiene, cover your cough, wear a mask, and distance whenever possible.
We are grateful that the 2nd semester has not had any disruptions but are not naive enough to think we are immune from them. Thank you for your continued support in this area.
Have a great weekend!
Ryan
