Principal's Message
Welcome back after a week off. I hope you have a good week and are looking forward to the weekend. Please read below for a few updates from the school.
1. Orientation Evening - Thursday, March 4th
We are excited to be hosting our orientation evening on Thursday, March 4th. The events give us a chance to educate and excite our incoming gr. 9 students about the opportunities that lie ahead at Bert Church. As well, we are hosting an informational session for our gr. 9 students heading into gr. 10 next year. Please see the information below for both events.
Bert Church High School Virtual Open House
Bert Church High School (BCHS) will be hosting a virtual open house for families of grade 8 students on Thursday, March 4 at 6 PM. This Zoom meeting will introduce families to BCHS, high school programming, optional course offerings, and our learning support team. Families will also have an opportunity to ask questions and speak to school staff. To join the meeting, please use the following link: https://rockyview.zoom.us/j/96447340731

2. Planning for next year
With the calendar turning over to March, we are entering full planning mode for the 2021.22 school year. As part of this, students will be receiving course selection sheets in the weeks to come to help select their courses for next school year. The reason I am mentioning this now is the more accurate those selections are, the better our programming can be for students. Please keep an eye open for these sheets coming home in the middle of March.
3. Construction Shop gets an overhaul
As many of you are aware, we were not able to offer Construction this year due to staffing changes caused by COVID-19. We are excited to have taken the opportunity to overhaul the shop, and with the support of RVS, will have an updated, modern space for kids to engage with the course next year. We’ll share pictures in the weeks to come when it is completed.
4. Enrollment update/average class sizes
With our enrolment settled in for semester 2, we are currently at 1170 students total, with 232 online and 938 in person. In looking ahead to 2021.22, we are projected to grow by about 40 students and are at the top of the list for portables. We are hopeful the government will provide portables to BCHS in the 2021.22 school year to accommodate our student population.
With our emphasis on more manageable class sizes going into the year, we are pleased to share that our average class sizes in our core areas range from a low of 26 to a high of 28. In our CTS areas, the average drops to 21. Manageable class sizes allow for greater distancing with students when possible and also more engagement with teacher and student as they navigate the curriculum. This has taken an investment from the school as we shifted 7 teachers online for semester 2 so we are grateful to maintain these manageable class sizes.
Thank you for your support and have a great weekend,
Ryan
