Principal's Message

Hi Everyone,

With unseasonably warm weather this week, it was nice to see more kids outside enjoying it! There certainly is a buzz about the school with the new semester kicking into full gear. Please see below for a few updates.

1. Health Protocols

Further to the Premier's announcement on Tuesday, masks will be optional for students while at school starting Monday, February 14th. Students may still wear one if they feel more comfortable but mask-wearing will not be enforced by staff any longer. We ask that students be respectful of their peer's choices in this area and do not anticipate any issues with this next week. Please keep an eye on Rocky View Schools Operational Plan for the most up-to-date measures still in place for schools. A reminder that students may still be required to wear masks in other places (Genesis Place, public transit, etc...) so having one in their backpack or coat jacket is recommended. Thank you for your continued support and cooperation.

2. June Exam Break/Semester 2 Assessment

Over the past two years, our assessment practices have had to adapt and change dramatically due to the impact on in-person learning brought on by the pandemic. Teachers have had to review how their marks are determined while flexibility had to be at the forefront. The growth has been significant and students have benefitted from this.

During this time, Rocky View Schools has updated their assessment administrative procedure (AP 360) to reflect current best practices as well as set guidelines for teachers to aim for around fair and equitable assessment practices. The impact this has on the BCHS community is seen throughout the school.
  • All students in every class will be given ongoing reassessment opportunities throughout semester 2. This reassessment will be done within a ‘reasonable’ time frame’ (typically prior to moving onto new material or units) to give the student the best opportunity to show improvement.
  • Students in all grades will be afforded the opportunity to be reassessed in June, like this past exam break. Students in gr. 9 and 12 will write the Provincial Achievement Test (Gr. 9 PAT) and Diploma in accordance with the government’s plans. A decision will be made later in 2022 regarding April, June and August diploma exams.
  • All student’s grades will be reported in a final percentage grade, as is the requirement for high school students in Alberta.
  • Students will be provided feedback throughout the semester on curricular outcomes they could improve and a path forward to do so.
Our driving question at BCHS is ‘How might we increase the probability of success for all students. We know that our assessment practices impact student success and we need them to be fair and equitable. Thank you for supporting us on this journey and we look forward to working together this semester.

3. Extra-Curricular Events - BCHS

We are grateful that throughout the 2021.22 school year sporting events have been able to continue at BCHS, with limited spectators. As of Monday, February 14th, we will not be checking tickets or QR codes for games hosted at BCHS, as the province has removed the REP and capacity limits for these events. Adults will still be required to wear masks until the province moves into stage 2, which we anticipate will be early March.

We thank everyone for your cooperation in the past six months as we have worked to keep extra-curricular sports running and look forward to things returning to pre-pandemic protocols in the near future.

4. Portables Update

We received word the fire hydrant has been approved and will be installed soon. This is exciting news. We are now waiting on the furnaces to be fired up (missing a few parts) and windows to be installed in two of them. There is no set move-in date as of this writing but we are optimistic it will happen soon.

5. Parking

With the increase in students each year, our parking lot has become quite full. We have tried to help with the flow by limiting students crossing East Lake Blvd after school while the lot empties of cars. Moving forward, we will have pylons in a specific area of the lot to ensure cars aren't parking where students cross into the lot after school. By not parking near the entrance we allow for better, safer flow in the lot for everyone. Cars may pull in front of the last pylon but may not stop beside the pylons. Thank you for your cooperation with this.

Have a great weekend,
