Principal's Message

Hi Everyone,

1. Next Week Students Choosing Courses for the 2022-23 School Year
Next week, students will begin the process of choosing courses for the next school year. Families can have a positive influence on this process by reviewing possible courses and programs that might be a good fit for their children. If you would like to get a head start on the course selection process, the following steps are recommended:
  1. Review the 2022-23 High School Planner available on our website to learn about the courses and programs we offer.
  2. Discuss goals and plans with your child.
  3. Use the My High School Planner form to consider the pre-requisites for possible post-secondary programs and map out a plan to achieve the high school courses needed to meet your student's goals.
Students will be given their course planning forms on Tuesday, March 8. They will return their signed forms by Friday, March 11. Students will be called down to the Learning Commons to consult with an administrator or counsellor about their choices and to enter their course requests between March 14-17. Feel free to reach out to your grade level administrator or counsellor if you have any questions.
Grade 9: Mr. Castiglione, Assistant Principal;  Ms. Quinlan-Jacob, Counselor
Grade 10: Ms. Cumberland, Assistant Principal;  Ms. Tiemstra, Counselor
Grade 11: Mr. Makkreel, Assistant Principal;  Ms. Quinlan-Jacob, Counselor

2. Chatting with your child about vandalism

While technology can lead to many positive outcomes, one negative has been the increasing trend in vandalism due to Tik Tok challenges. If you're not familiar, students complete 'devious licks', which is another word for theft, and either vandalize or steal things from school. We have seen an uptick in bathroom vandalism this year due to this trend.

Today I announced that only three weeks after we have access to our new bathrooms, one urinal in the boy's washroom has been vandalized and is not able to be used. This is disappointing and hurts the 99.9% of students in our school who do not participate in such activities.

I encouraged kids to stand up for their school and not permit vandalism to occur in areas where we cannot have cameras and simply cannot supervise the entire day. The money needed to repair vandalism comes from the same budget that could improve resources at school for all students. By collectively reporting vandalism that occurs we can stop this dangerous trend from surfacing again in our school. We encourage parents to talk to their kids about the social repercussions of vandalism and the damage it does to the communities we live in. Thank you for your support in this area and thank you to the vast majority of students who do not participate in it.

Have a great weekend!

Featuring seventeen artworks from the Alberta Foundation for the Arts collection, the exhibition Fields of Vision, Lines of Sight highlights Alberta’s vast prairie landscapes rendered two dimensionally by twelve artists: Margareet Beekman, Ken Christopher, Hilda Davis, Dee Parsons De Wit, Primrose Diakow, Greg Jones, RFM McInnis, E. Annette Nieukerk, Stanford Perrott, John Snow, Armand Vallee, and Joan van Belkum.

Each artist uses varied techniques to portray Alberta’s flat prairies, rolling hills, and long highways with rich depth and clear lines of sight. This exhibition was curated by Ashley Slemming, and it has been organized by the Alberta Society of Artists for the Alberta Foundation for the Arts Travelling Exhibition program. We are thrilled to display it at BCHS this month.
