Principal's Message

Rocky View Schools - Superintendent of Schools announces leadership announcements

Good Afternoon,

I hope you have had a good week. I can't think of a year where I've been more grateful for an early spring. After living in Alberta for 40 years, I am not naive enough to think we have seen our last winter weather for the year though!

Prior to the updates, I want to take a minute to acknowledge the recent anniversary of schools shutting down last spring. On Sunday, March 15th, Dr. Hinshaw announced schools would be closed to in-person learning for the extended future. If you were like me, this is the moment COVID-19 became very real. A year ago today, we were still waiting for RVS to determine the direction for at-home learning. We have learned much since then.

During this time of pandemic learning, students, teachers, and families have endured modified curriculum at-home learning (March - June, 2020), cancelled sporting events and in-person ceremonies, like graduation, uncertain plans for what fall startup would be, mandatory quarantine periods through potential close contact at school, students and staff contracting the virus, school moving to online for 4 weeks in November/December/January, dozens of new COVID-19 protocols in school and out, moving to full time online learning and teaching for some of our students and staff, and uncertainty about what the future holds after this pandemic.

Through it all, students, staff, and families have consistently remained optimistic, resilient, and supportive of one another. We have had our share of ups and downs at BCHS in the past year, but I couldn't be more impressed with the way the school community has banded together to get through an incredibly difficult year. We know we still have a ways to go till we can talk about COVID in the past-tense, but we also want to acknowledge how far we've come together.

We are grateful for our kids. About once a week, either a substitute teacher or student teacher will mention to me what great students we have at BCHS. I agree. Thank you for being a supportive community through the most trying year of our educational lives. We couldn't do this alone and we are grateful for you.

1. Student Registration Processes
Due to some unforeseen staffing events, we postponed our registration for in-person students till Wednesday, March 24 - Friday, March 26th. This is the step where students come to the Learning Commons and enter their course selections into PowerSchool under the guidance of administration and counsellors. We will proceed with that process this week so if you still have your course pick sheet in your backpack, feel free to bring it to the office.

  • Registration for summer school begins on March 9th but the courses do not open till Monday, April 12th, the first day back from spring break.

3. Accountability Pillar Survey

Parents and Students in gr. 10 will be participating in the Accountability Survey from Alberta Education in the weeks to come. Parents, your Random Access Code will come in the mail starting March 25th. The more parents who participate, the better the data and feedback for our school. We look forward to analyzing these results!

4. Student Fee Collection

As of February 28th, 2021, all school fees are now due. Please go to this link to either register or login to access your account. For detailed information go to the BCHS web page under "Our School", "School Fees" to learn more about fee payment options and eligibility of fee waivers.

Please contact Mrs. Twomey at ctwomey@rockyview.ab.ca or call 403 948 3800 ext 7006 if you have any questions or concerns relating to your account or require a copy of your invoice. We appreciate your prompt attention to submitting fees.

Thank you for your support and have a great weekend,

Ryan
Students in Ms. Jans' Social Studies 9 class explored the Youth Criminal Justice Act through a case study. The students had to create their own case study, explore the act, and conclude what would happen in the end. A great way to familiarize students with the curriculum!
