Principal's Message

Good Afternoon Everyone,

Our students and staff are getting to know each other, and we look forward to working together to achieve our goals. Creating good habits early in the school year is important. Below, you'll read a few ways to continue the strong start so many of our students have had.

PowerSchool

As marks are entered into PowerSchool, please use the app to check your child's progress. Teachers update their marks every 2 - 3 weeks, and you can set up alerts on your phone when things change. This is also a great way to monitor attendance!

Safe Arrival

Speaking of attendance, you can enter your child's attendance on Safe Arrival. Download the app and get started with attendance.

Being Here Matters!

Did you know that students missing 10% of classes hurts their learning? These could be excused or unexcused absences. 2 days away/month would add up to 10% for the year. Why do we share this? We are having conversations with students with unexcused absences to ensure they know we value their time in class. Teachers have thoughtfully prepared their lessons to maximize the learning opportunities for students, so attendance is critical.

If your child has an appointment, is ill, or has to miss school for any reason, I encourage them to be in touch with their teacher to see how to keep up with their work. Thank you for your support in this.

Student Devices

It is great to see so many students bringing their own devices to school. Often, when parents hear their child needs a laptop, they think of a MacBook (or that's what the child tells their parents they need!). Currently, Staples is offering multiple Chromebooks for under $200.00! If you're thinking of getting your child a device but are worried about the cost, it doesn't get much better than this!

If your child would like to utilize our long-term rental program at the school, please have them come to the office to get a form so they can prepare each day for school.

Cafeteria Open

On Monday, Sep 19th, students can purchase lunch at the school cafeteria! Enjoy terrific food at great prices in our new cafeteria.

Our golf team represented BCHS well this week. Congratulations to everyone on their strong play!

Ms. Medd's Science 9 class conducted a pond water study of the east lake this week, including chemical analysis and invertebrate study. We are fortunate to have a beautiful space behind the school for them to do it! Thanks for sharing Ms. Medd.

The University of Calgary is once again offering a free learn-to-code club. For more details, see the promotion below!

It's nice when your division superintendent takes time out of his busy schedule to chat with our staff and students. Thanks for coming by, Mr. Luterbach. We appreciate it!

Our Biology 30 CAP students got into the action this week with an eye dissection. Great example of hands on learning!

Our Reconciliation Garden is taking shape and this weekend, with the help of students & staff we will be planting most of our garden. We have been working closely with Michelle from Aris Landscape Design and her student Lara. We can’t thank them enough for their expertise and time.

We welcomed a small but passionate group of parents for our High School 101 session on Thursday night. Thanks to everyone who attended and the staff who helped!

Over 30 students made their way to the gym on Friday after school for some open gym time. It was great seeing guys and girls from gr. 9 - 12 sharing the space!

The cafeteria renovation is complete with new furniture filling the space. The initial reaction from the students was excitement as they're enjoying the modern touches!
