Principal's Message

Good Morning Everyone,

We have officially concluded regular classes for semester 1. I've included the schedule of events for the next week below.

Re-assessment/Diploma Exam days - Thursday, January 19th - Thursday, January 26th
Last Day for Gr.12 re-assessment opportunities - Monday, January 23rd
Last Day for Gr. 9 - 11 re-assessment opportunities - Thursday, January 26th
No classes - Friday, January 27th
First Day of Semester 2 - Monday, January 30th
Science 9 Provincial Achievement Test - Monday, January 30th
Social Studies 9 Provincial Achievement Test - Tuesday, January 31st

The next four school days are terrific opportunities for gr. 9 students to take advantage of smaller class sizes to receive support and help in their year-long Math and ELA classes. Students can come for targeted support for the classes they want and depart for ones they don't need.

Additionally, we will be running study skills sessions for our gr. 9's as they prepare for their PAT on Tuesday/Wednesday next week during Block 4. Students can attend to review testing strategies and other topics!

On Monday, January 30th, we will run provincial achievement tests beginning semester 2. The date for the PATs was set by Alberta Education and did not allow for school divisions to deviate. As RVS is one of the few school divisions with gr. 9 students in high schools, it conflicts with the start of semester 2.

The first two days of Semester 2 will see our gr. 9 students write their PATs in the morning. Once they complete their PAT, they will proceed to their semester 2 class. Staff will be present to help them with their schedule, but students can help themselves by looking ahead and seeing what they have. Schedules are available on PowerSchool.

Course changes will be processed on Monday, January 30th, through our Admin Wall procedures. We will begin with gr. 12 students and work our way from there. Typically, we don't have as many changes in semester 2, so we hope to be done by Wednesday, February 1st.

We are looking forward to wrapping up Semester 1 and getting Semester 2 off to a good start!

Students in Art 10 showcased their skills around the school with their semester-end projects. Well done kids!
Our students in General Music showcased their skills with Sweet Child of Mine this week. What talent! Click the picture to hear a snippet of their work!
Final assessments look different in Cosmetology. Students could put their skills to the test by working on their brave parents' hair. It is great to see an authentic audience benefit from the learning that occurred.
Students in Drama 20/30 performed lipsyncs to hits from the Spice Girls and Katy Perry! Well done on the choreography and enthusiasm, kids!
On Thursday afternoon, local Lions Club member Ron Biancini presented our school with a cheque for $1000 for the upkeep and expansion of our Indigenous Reconciliation Garden. Thank you to the club for their support!
The Airdrie Public Library has some teen-centric activities in the weeks ahead. Check them out!
Basketball season continued last weekend, with our Jr. Girls bringing a silver home in the Strathmore JV tournament. Well done to all involved!
Students were hard at work concluding their Semester 1 courses this week. We are now in our Diploma/PAT/Re-assessment period, where students can continue their learning through summative assessments or 1-3 re-assessments. Good luck kids!
Staff celebrated the last day of classes with beach attire on Wednesday. A fun way to wrap up regular instruction days.

Update from Off-Campus!

Agriculture Studies Major | Courses For Degree | Career Girls

The Green Certificate Program provides students in Grades 10-12 with opportunities to enter a variety of agriculture-related, structured learning pathways as a part of their senior high school program and to earn up to 16 Grade 12 diploma credits and a credential leading to a career in agribusiness. Students learn on the job under the direction of experienced farm personnel. Trainees select one of the specializations and, under the guidance of their trainer, work towards mastering all skills within their training program.

If you want to learn more about the Green Certificate program, students and their parents/guardians can register for an upcoming 30-minute virtual information session hosted by the Olds Regional Coordinator for this program. Attending one of these meetings is a mandatory step in the Green Certificate process.
