Principal's Message

Good Afternoon Everyone,

With this being the final Charger Connects of the year, it provides the opportunity to reflect on the entirety of the 2021.22 school year at BCHS. As is the case with the weekly edition of the Connects, let's look back through the year in photos!

More Room Needed!

Portables dominated much of our communication this year, leading many to probably wonder if I had an odd fascination with the project (I did go outside often to lend advice to anyone working on site but they didn't implement much of it!)

We were thrilled to see pilings in the ground prior to the first snow with the hope of expanding our capacity for our ever-growing population!

While the project didn't follow the proposed schedule, we were happy to see the new teaching spaces arrive on campus and to finally move during the month of May!

Spirit Days are Back

Starting in September our leadership students prioritized getting kids involved in spirit days throughout the year to increase the connection and fun at school after a hard 2020.21 school year. Throughout the year, kids could be found participating in multiple different ways in our school-wide events! Whether it was dressing up, throwing dodgeballs, or raising nearly $25,000 towards cancer research with Relay for Life, these events added life to our school.

Truth and Reconciliation

Bert Church High School staff and students continued their journey to learn the truth about Indigenous people and their history while taking meaningful steps towards reconciliation. The events surrounding Truth and Reconciliation Day were impactful and the work of our students in Indigenous Studies is leading to a garden in front of the school As well, we welcomed an Indigenous theatre group to our school in May to perform New Blood, a play attended by over 300 of our students on the history of residential schools.

Awards and Assemblies back in person!

After moving everything online for 1.5 years, we were able to begin hosting awards, like our Academic and Extra-Curricular, as well as having whole school assemblies. Unfortunately for me, the first assembly for Relay for Life led to being covered in shaving cream!

The return of athletics

All sports returned to BCHS this year and our students were ready to go. Chargers represented everywhere this year and we were proud of their accomplishments and the coaches' hard work.

Staff vs. Student Competitions!

Students were able to take on the staff in different games this year, with the highlight being the victory on the ice over the *injured staff hockey team. These school-wide events brought life to the gym and rink and were a highlight for many!

Performing Arts returned to the stage

After having our doors shuttered to live theatre and music, our performers returned to the stage with gusto. Theatre arts performed A Winter's Gift and Mamma Mia, bringing audiences to their feet. Our band program had their first live concert in 2.5 years, with a nearly 3-hour set. It is great to see our kids on the stage!

A return to more 'normal'
Most impactfully for all students and staff, our rhythms at school were able to return to a more normal pace, with students engaged in hands-on learning, working in groups, hearing from guest speakers, and not walking in the same direction in the hallways. To see and hear the energy return to the school was awesome and we look forward to more of the same next year!

Graduation!

For the first time in 3 years, nearly 1600 people gathered at Genesis Place to celebrate the 2022 Graduating Class. The power of a large group witnessing a momentous occasion was not lost on me as I shook 239 graduates' hands! Congrats to our graduating class - we're proud of you!

Mourning a colleague

In a season of loss for so many, the BCHS staff and students were not immune as we grieve the loss of our colleague/friend/teacher Norm Cobble. We still remember Rachel and her family as they grapple with the new reality without Norm and are working on ways to support them moving forward.

We have appreciated partnering with you this year to see students at BCHS have success. Thank you for the support and we look forward to what lies ahead in 2022.23.

Any communication forthcoming prior to the end of the school year will be in School Messenger. Have a great summer!

Yearbooks
There are a lot of unclaimed Yearbooks in the office which have been paid for but not picked up! Please come to the office in the next 8 days if you need to pick up your yearbook!

Textbook Return
If you have not returned your textbooks to the school, please do so. Students must return materials from this year prior to signing ones out for next year in the fall! These books are expensive to replace and getting them back in a timely fashion allows for good continuity of learning for everyone.

Locker Cleanout
Students are asked to ensure they clean their lockers out after they write an exam or are in the school for reassessment. Any items remaining in lockers will be put in the lost and found once the school year concludes.
