From the Principal's Desk
by Ryan Reed

Hi Everyone,

I hope this email finds you doing well and you've had a good week. This marks the last Charger Connects of the 2020 school year, one that we won't forget anytime soon. Thank you for your support, hard work, and patience as we made it through the year. Please see below for some updates as we head into the summer.

1. Student Report Cards

Report cards will be available online for all students this year on Monday, June 29th. . To access the online report card, you will need to login to your Parent Portal account. For an easy video tutorial, please follow the link below.

Online Report Card Tutorial

A couple of reminders as you look at your student's report card:

  1. Student marks could not go down from March 13th (end of R3 for this year). They could only go up.
  2. Teachers have been asked to use standardized comments relating to Covid-19 in order to provide consistency for parents.
  3. Students who either failed a course or opted out of CTS courses will receive unallocated credits. These credits count towards their 100 credit graduation total but do not count for pre-requisites. The most unallocated credits a student could receive this year was 15. We had 270 students receive at least 1 unallocated credit, with most of them being in CTS. The most a student received was 13. This will lead to some timetable changes in the fall as we work to adjust to the programming needs of our students. We will be flexible. I am so impressed when I read through the comments on how well our students engaged in their at-home learning. In a school of nearly 1100 students, the vast majority engaged in either all or nearly all their courses. Well done!
    1. Of note, unallocated credits do not show up on student report cards.
  4. If you have questions about the report card on Monday, please reach out to

2. Student Timetables

All of our individual student timetables have been completed and once the school-year rolls over from 2019.20 - 2020.21, they will be available online for students to look at. This will be happening at the beginning of August. After this, students will be able to see their individual timetables by logging into their PowerSchool account.

Course change processes will begin for students in August upon return from summer break. More information will be sent about specific dates when administration returns in August.

Normal course change processes will occur in September at the administration wall. We would ask for patience from our students as we sort through their scheduling in the fall.

3. Returning Textbooks and Devices & Picking up Yearbooks!

Thank you to everyone for returning your resources this week.

Over the course of the week, we received over 1000 out of 1400 outstanding resources. Your last chance to return books is Monday, June 29th from 10-12 and 12:30 - 3:00 PM. Please come to the back doors and someone will be there to greet you.

4. Return to School Plans

With this school year concluding, staff have shifted their focus to planning for next year. Today was spent in department meetings outlining what needs to be done prior to September in order for us to be flexible with either scenario presented by Alberta Education.

We know that regardless of what scenario we return to, having a strong digital presence with online resources is going to be necessary. Specifically, we know that the chance of students & staff being absent could be high. We also know that Alberta Education expects students to be engaged in 6 hours per course/week, up from 3 hours that we did for emergency remote learning. Teachers will be tasked with having courses online for students who cannot be there in person and for the ability to shift to at-home learning in the event of school closure.

This is a significant task and one that we will have to devote time to next week and in August upon returning to school.

A decision will be made on August 1st as to which scenario we will be moving ahead with. Rocky View Schools will be communicating with families over the summer so be sure to check your email and stay up to date on what is happening with a return to school.

Thank you once again for all of your support this year - we look forward to a restful break and we'll see you in the fall.

Ryan
Our students continued to impress with their creativity with at-home learning. Mr. Bonner's students created a wordless video for ELA 30-1. Here are a couple of examples. Well done kids!
Staff wanted to send our students off with a playful lip-sync video. Enjoy the musical 'talents" of some of our BCHS staff!
