From the Principal's Desk
by Ryan Reed

Hi Everyone,

I hope you're doing well and have had a good week. We are certainly in the home stretch for our school year and will provide a few updates below.

1. Weekly Learning Plans

Students and parents will be receiving three more installments of the weekly learning plan (June 8, 15, 22).

Of importance though is that students will have their final, summative assessments communicated in the Monday, June 8th learning plan. This will allow all of our students the appropriate time to complete the summative assessments for the remainder of the year. Some students are taking four core courses and the maximum number of summative assessments we can assign in a week is two. Having students know what they have left to complete their courses will occur on Monday, June 8th. No summative assessments will be assigned for the week of June 22 - 26th as marks are due to be stored on June 26th.

Report cards will be issued online on Monday, June 29th. More information on how to access these will be communicated prior to the date.

2. Celebrating our graduates

Thanks to all who have been involved in ensuring our graduates are celebrated this spring. Deliveries of graduation boxes and acknowledgement from school administration will be occurring this weekend, rain or shine! We look forward to seeing our graduates this weekend.

The virtual graduation ceremony is being created with a release on our YouTube channel on Saturday, June 20th, at 2:00 PM. As mentioned before, all three Airdrie high schools will be celebrating their graduates that day for a 'graduation day in Airdrie' and I look forward to seeing what our families plan that day. Thanks to the staff and students who are putting lots of hours into the production of the ceremony.

Local media is stepping up to celebrate the graduating class of 2020 as well. Please follow this link to contribute to a special edition of Airdrie Life for our graduates!

3. 2020.21 Planning

Teachers have received their teaching assignments for the 2020.21 school year. Thanks to the work of all the people, led my Mr. Castiglione, with the timetable this year.

Conversations are happening at the local school board level about different 'return to school' options in the fall. As we are now looking at wrapping up this school year, our thoughts are shifting to what next fall might look like. We will communicate with our families as soon as we know anything.

We will be communicating student timetables prior to school wrapping up for the year and may even be able to process some timetable changes, starting with our next year gr. 12's, to ensure as smooth of opening next fall as can be expected.

4. Vancouver Band Trip Cancellation and refunds

Rocky View Schools' business operations have been diligently working through all the different trips that were cancelled this spring to ensure parents receive their refunds. We have been able to refund our gr. 9 band trip that was cancelled and are very close to beginning refunds for our gr. 10 - 12 Vancouver trip. A letter will be sent to all gr. 10-12 parents of band students early next week outlining where we are at.

Have a great weekend, see you next Friday.

Ryan

Thanks to our staff at BCHS we have assembled approximately 225 graduation boxes for our students. The boxes have personal notes and items so attention to detail was a must. We appreciate all the hands that helped. Deliveries of the boxes are happening this weekend!
We're very excited to share with you that it was recently announced that Bert Church has made the final round in the Can You Hear Me Now? Provincial poetry slam! Only the top 2 teams of six moved ahead, so that's pretty amazing. Congratulations to our Bert Church Slam Poetry team for their first-place finish in the provincial competition. The Chargers poets defeated St. Francis in the finals!

Our competing team this year consists of Madeline Belle, Sydney Brown, Charley Frost, Graicy Jenkins, Poppy Pruner, Sammy Pruner, and Emily Roock. Congrats kids and thanks for sharing Mr. Smith.

Yearbook Signing: SOCIALLY DISTANCED EDITION

We are excited to announce that the Bert Church yearbook signing tradition is alive and it’s fully digital to suit our socially distanced students.

Jostens has just launched a new platform, Yearbook Digital Signing Pages, that gives every student in our school the chance to create virtual signing pages, invite their friends/family to leave messages, and print out the final pages to keep with the yearbook as a permanent keepsake. This is free for every student whether they purchased a yearbook or not.

Instructions:

  • Create an account at yearbooksigning.jostens.com
  • Pick a date (end of June) for when you want all the signatures by.
  • Select OTHER (end of list) when asked for which State
  • On the next page you will create an account with your email address and password. You will then be sent a verification code via email.
  • Enter this code and then you’ll be given a link to your own signing pages. Copy that link and share it with anyone (friends/family/school staff) you want to “sign your yearbook”. Once the end date arrives, you can print them. Any messages you don’t want can be deleted when you login to your account.
  • When signing other people’s yearbook pages, PLEASE sign your name after your message, as it does not record your name with your message unless you type it out.

*For those who purchased yearbooks, they will arrive later in June. We will be in touch once they arrive to discuss how we will distribute them.

*There may be limited extra copies to purchase, however, we won’t know how many until they arrive. We will also let students/parents know to purchase the extra copies at a later date.

If you have any questions, please email Mrs. Amy Stachniak at astachniak@rockyview.ab.ca
