From the Principal's Desk
by Ryan Reed

Hi Everyone,

We have had a week unlike any that I can remember. As we mentioned earlier this week in our parent message, this is a challenging time for everyone. We hope you are well and are following Alberta Health Services recommendations around social distancing and staying home if you're ill.  We are thankful to our government leaders, health care providers, and everyone else working so diligently to contain Covid-19. Please know, we have been working hard to take the necessary steps to prepare ourselves to provide the best learning continuity possible for our students.

Learning Continuity

The learning continuity plan for students will be communicated by Wednesday, March 25th at the latest. This plan will outline what learning is going to look like for our students at Bert Church. It will be following the guidelines released by Alberta Education this morning. As a reminder, we are taking our cues from Rocky View Schools, not developing our own plan. If you have questions regarding the learning plan, we do not have the answers right now.

Supporting our Students

We have set up a virtual Teacher Advisory support system where our teachers will systematically check in with their students. This requires students checking their RVS gmail accounts. Please encourage your child to check their account.

We want to ensure our students are well and feel supported prior to their at-home learning starting. This is a big deal for kids as well as adults.

At-Home Technology

As detailed in the Continuing Student Learning document, a main vessel for at-home learning to occur is online. One challenge to online learning at home is access to proper technology. Please take the time to fill out this brief form to help us plan for at-home learning.

Picking up of Belongings

Thanks to everyone who came by the school in such an orderly fashion over the past few days. Over 95% of students picked up their belongings from their lockers. To help comply with AHS' expectations, our school building will be closed next week. We have bagged and organized all the remaining possessions from students. It is secure at school.

Moving Forward

At this point we don't know how long these measures will be in place. Premier Kenney has frequently mentioned longer periods of time, not shorter. We know this is presenting challenges in every aspect of life for our students and families. Know that you're on our minds.

I would ask for continued patience, grace, and understanding for our staff as we work through this change. We can get through this if we all stay together and optimistic. Thanks for your support thus far and I look forward to working with you to see our kids have success.
