From the Principal's Desk
by Ryan Reed

Hi Everyone,

In this space last week I wrote about when the learning continuity plan would be communicated and what next steps would be required from BCHS. This week, we communicated this learning plan to our students and families and requested some feedback as well.

I want to start by saying how impressed I have been by the Bert Church community over the past two weeks. A popular quote states "adversity does not build character, it reveals it". I have seen that to be true as all members of the Bert Church community have worked hard, shown patience, sought to understand, and were gracious with each other as we transitioned to at-home learning. I would like to express my gratitude on behalf of our staff to our families.

Transitioning from regular brick and mortar school to completely online for a school division of 25,000 is an onerous task. Our central administration staff should be commended for their thoughtful approach to transitioning families to our new normal in education. Thank you to the leadership that was shown by Rocky View Schools in supporting our students as we hurriedly worked to come up with a plan. RVS has provided tons of resources for parents, staff, and students as we all make the transition to at-home working/schooling.

With that said, all we have managed to do is get organized and planned enough to get to the starting line. Now is where the work begins. We know there will be challenges ahead and we want to tackle them together.

My encouragement to you today is to ensure your child engages with their learning starting Monday! We will be tracking students who have not engaged and following up to ensure they have everything they need to learn at-home. Starting Monday, it is our expectation that all students will actively engage their core courses. As parents/guardians, you can help us with that by checking in with your child. If your kids are anything like mine, having a few hours of structure in their day wouldn't be a bad thing. If you require flexibility due to circumstances caused by Covid-19, please make your child's teacher aware so we can work together.

We recognize that students are also missing their option courses. Our non-core teachers are missing teaching them as well. Patience is required as we roll out the cores this week. Look for more information on what option courses will be available for your child to stay enrolled in on Monday, April 6th.

Thanks again - have a great weekend - keep that social distancing up!

Ryan
RVS Summer School

Summer School Registration - St. Pius X High School

While I am not sure how Summer School is going to work with all that is happening in education right now, RVS is opening up registration for their summer school. I don't want our families to miss out on this so I am sharing. Please know our counsellors are busy with our students right now and have very few answers for what could be possibly happening with summer school. If you have a question about it please contact myself (rreed@rockyview.ab.ca) and I'll try to help you out.
