We had a busy but great week at school. Around this time of year we start dreaming of spring activities (mind you the weekend weather forecast may not agree with us). Along with spring comes thinking about next year. We hosted 2 orientation evenings this past week, with one being to for our gr. 9 - 10 and other for our incoming gr. 9's. Both events were rewarding as we got to talk about the different elements that make Bert Church a unique place for students to attend school.
I was encouraged by the participation of students and staff in both the events. Having more than just the administrators and school counsellors at these events to talk about what makes BCHS great is awesome.
We know we don't get everything right but the week left me encouraged that we're moving in a positive direction as a school. Thanks to everyone who helped make the orientation evenings enjoyable!

Students in Criminology (Biology & Forensic Sciences) used some class time this week to engage in a socratic debate about potential lung transplant patients. As a judge, I had the opportunity to listen to each argument for the different patients. I walked away impressed with the critical thinking and maturity on display from students as they examined the difficult subject. Thanks for the invite Mr. Horne!
For the months of March and April, the Airdrie Public Library is hosting student art. Select work from Bert Church Students will be on display. Stop by the library and check it out!
Basketball season is coming to a close with some strong results from our teams. On Tuesday, the season ended for our Sr. Girls as they lost a tough game vs. the Chestermere Lakers. Thanks to Coach Kirk for his leadership with the girls this year.
Our Sr. Boys lost a close battle in the Divisional semi-final vs. Cochrane, 83-74. The boys focus now shifts to zones where they will meet Canmore on Tuesday, March 10th at 7:00 PM. There are 2 berths up for grabs for 3A provincials and the boys go into zones ranked 4th. Good luck next week!
Our Junior Varsity boys are competing for divisional hardware as they host W.H. Croxford tonight at 7:45 PM. The winner will play for gold tomorrow afternoon in Springbank.
Last but certainly not least, our JV Girls are looking to keep their undefeated streak in league play alive tonight against the Yankee Valley rival WH Croxford. The girls go at 6:00 PM tonight at home vs. Croxford with the hopes of being in the final tomorrow afternoon in Springbank.

The Boys and Girls Club is having a Job Fair on Thursday March 12th from 3-6 pm. There will be employers that students can connect with as well as Prospects and Wheatland Employment Services. It's a good opportunity that students will not want to miss!
Is your child interested in going on a trip to New York to explore their passion in drama or art? If so, there is a parent/guardian meeting on March 11th at 6:30 PM in the learning commons. Mr. Goodyear and Ms. Tschritter are excited to share what they have planned for Spring break 2021! If you attended the previous meeting in December you do not have to come to this one.
Are you spring cleaning? Do you have children's books that your kids have outgrown? Lego blocks that are taking up room in your closet? AE Bowers Elementary is looking for donations of gently used books (French too!) and Lego blocks or figurines that will be put to good use. Grade 9’s – Career Exploration Centre at SAIT – Field trip on April 1
40 grade 9’s have the opportunity for a trip to SAIT on April 1, to do some career planning and try out some of the programs at SAIT. This is one of the best field trips offered to High School students – and it is free.
Consent forms are available in the career centre and main office. Mrs. Smith will be around to grade 9 classes next week.

Scholarships Don’t Hope for a Scholarship ~ Plan for a Scholarship
March Scholarship Tip
Collect letters of recommendation.
Scholarship and college applications usually require a few letters of recommendation from teachers and community members who know you best. They could include your employer, teachers, coaches, high school counselors, or other adults who can testify to your strengths, qualifications, and ambition.
Since you’re asking for a significant favor, it’s best to provide as much relevant information as possible to the letter-writer. You might even want to provide a Word template for them to use as they write your recommendation. Here are some other things you can provide:
Overview of the scholarship (if it’s for a specific application)
Your key strengths as related to the requirements AND your relationship to the reviewer. (Example: If you’re applying for a leadership scholarship, you might ask your Honor Society advisor to address your successful reelection as president.)
A copy of your resume
Any other plans for the future, like which colleges you’re applying to and what major you will pursue
After you collect your letters of recommendation, make sure you thank your reviewers for taking the time to help you.
Manulife Life Lessons Scholarship Program
A scholarship for students who have experience the death of a parent or guardian with littleto no life insurance.
For youth 17 – 24 yrs old to ease the financial burden of paying for post-secondary education costs
Must be graduating from High School in 2020 and registered and accepted into a post-secondary institution/continuing education after high school graduation /upgrading
Have a willingness to pursue post-secondary despite any outside circumstances or obstacles they have had to overcome
Must demonstrate a good work ethic, as this scholarship is not based on marks
Using the requirements listed above, please tell us (scholarship committee) in 250 words or less, how you have overcome obstacles in life, whether it be financial, emotional, physical, education, etc, to persevere with your education and choose to continue with post-secondary. Also, please state why you feel you need this scholarship.
