CHARGER CONNECTS

From the Principal's Desk
by Ryan Reed

Hi Everyone,

I apologize as I just now realized I never clicked send on the Charger Connects last week. This explains a few emails I received. I'm very sorry. Here's a double dose of the Charger Connects for you this week!

1. Learning Continuity feedback

Thanks to everyone who provided feedback in the Learning Continuity plan that RVS has implemented over the past two months. A couple of changes you will note from BCHS are:

a. Weekly Learning Plans will be emailed to both parents and students. This should have started this past week and will continue until the end of the year.

b. Template change - The Weekly Learning Plan template has been slimmed down to get rid of the header at the top for those who print it out. The new template will be shared next Monday in the learning plan.

c. Assessment to complete the school year - Students will be given the remaining 'summative' assessments for the 2019.20 school year in their Monday, June 8th weekly learning plan. This will allow them to have 2 weeks to complete all their assessment for the year as we need the week of June 22 - 26 to complete grades and store marks for our students prior to submitting.

Students are not to have more than 2 summative assessments each week and the maximum number of courses students are carrying is 4. This allows them to spread the assessments out over 2 weeks if they so choose.

2. Celebrating our graduates

Our plan for celebrating our graduates this spring is moving forward with the arrival of cap and gowns, diplomas, boxes, and other items that are going into our graduation boxes. These boxes will be delivered to our students next weekend (June 5, 6, 7) by Bert Church staff and administration. We are excited to celebrate with our students. Importantly, an email will be going out to graduates on Monday to confirm the details of the delivery.

The virtual graduation ceremony is being created with a release on our YouTube channel on Saturday, June 20th, at 2:00 PM. As mentioned before, all three Airdrie high schools will be celebrating their graduates that day for a 'graduation day in Airdrie' and I look forward to seeing what our families plan that day. Thanks to the staff and students who are putting lots of hours into the production of the ceremony.

3. Return of School items

Students have textbooks and some have devices from the school. We are planning on having a return protocol for these items at the end of June. Please keep an eye on your email for details. It is important that we get all of the resources back so we can start next year with our full complement.

4. Predicting the future

Talks for return to school are still being had at the Alberta Education level. As a school principal, I have my own thoughts on what might be possible but it would be just that, my thoughts. The Education Minister Legrange outlined three different scenarios (normal school, blended in-person/at-home learning model, and continuing with at-home learning) a few weeks ago. Any decision on this topic will be made by Alberta Education and interpreted and communicated by Rocky View Schools.

I mentioned this in an Instagram video last week, but I am continually grateful for the hard work and perseverance of the entire Bert Church community. Parents, you're doing a great job supporting your kids while handling the day - to - day responsibilities. We know it's not easy. Thank you for your commitment.

Kids, keep up the great work. As I mentioned on Instagram, the more we stay connected to our learning now, the better our transition back to 'full-time school' will be whenever that happens. If you need help with anything, please reach out.

Our staff continues to work hard to support our students and each other in this less than normal time. Thanks to all of them for their hard work.

Have a great weekend, see you next Friday.

Ryan

Evalina J created a beautiful, moving video for her Audio/Video class. Thanks for sharing Evalina and best of luck with your Skills Canada contest!
Congratulations to the class of 2020 valedictorian JT Luterbach. Combining incredible academic ability with a kind, thoughtful approach to his community, JT is a wonderful representation of what being a Charger means. Congrats JT!
We're very excited to share with you that it was recently announced that Bert Church has made the final round in the Can You Hear Me Now? Provincial poetry slam! Only the top 2 teams of six moved ahead, so that's pretty amazing. The finals are running on May 30th - good luck kids!

Our competing team this year consists of Madeline Belle, Sydney Brown, Charley Frost, Graicy Jenkins, Poppy Pruner, Sammy Pruner, and Emily Roock. Congrats kids and thanks for sharing Mr. Smith.

Yearbook Signing: SOCIALLY DISTANCED EDITION

We are excited to announce that the Bert Church yearbook signing tradition is alive and it’s fully digital to suit our socially distanced students.

Jostens has just launched a new platform, Yearbook Digital Signing Pages, that gives every student in our school the chance to create virtual signing pages, invite their friends/family to leave messages, and print out the final pages to keep with the yearbook as a permanent keepsake. This is free for every student whether they purchased a yearbook or not.

Instructions:

  • Create an account at yearbooksigning.jostens.com
  • Pick a date (end of June) for when you want all the signatures by.
  • Select OTHER (end of list) when asked for which State
  • On the next page you will create an account with your email address and password. You will then be sent a verification code via email.
  • Enter this code and then you’ll be given a link to your own signing pages. Copy that link and share it with anyone (friends/family/school staff) you want to “sign your yearbook”. Once the end date arrives, you can print them. Any messages you don’t want can be deleted when you login to your account.
  • When signing other people’s yearbook pages, PLEASE sign your name after your message, as it does not record your name with your message unless you type it out.

*For those who purchased yearbooks, they will arrive later in June. We will be in touch once they arrive to discuss how we will distribute them.

*There may be limited extra copies to purchase, however, we won’t know how many until they arrive. We will also let students/parents know to purchase the extra copies at a later date.

If you have any questions, please email Mrs. Amy Stachniak at astachniak@rockyview.ab.ca
