Principal's Message

Good Morning Everyone,

I hope everyone has had a great week and that you're looking forward to the weekend. Please see below for a few updates.

1. Graduation!

We are hosting our first in-person, full-scale graduation ceremony on Saturday, May 28th for the class of 2022! With nearly 1600 guests in attendance, it will be a celebration of all our students have accomplished over the past 13 years.

A big thank you to Mrs. Cumberland, Mr. Verhees, and Mrs. Chadwick for their leadership and commitment to making the ceremony memorable. We're proud of our graduates and look forward to celebrating them tomorrow.

2. Cool Opportunity

Rocky View Schools is offering a dual credit opportunity for students interested in Veterinary Assistant Certification through Olds College. Eligible students in gr. 11 or 12 will earn a VTA certificate upon completion and could immediately start working in the industry. The division has 5 seats so spots will fill up quickly.

There are some very specific pre-requisites for this course. Students must either have completed or been on track to complete the following by the end of Gr. 12:

Biology 30, Chemistry 30 or Science 30, Math 20-1 or 20-2, English Language Arts 30- 1 or 30-2.

For other dual credit opportunities, see below. If you're interested, please email rreed@rockyview.ab.ca and I can provide the next steps.

3. Looking ahead

It's the time of year that feels like a bit of a sprint to the finish. We have 13 regular instructional days until the last day of classes, which is June 15th. A reminder, for students in gr. 9 and 12, you will be writing Provincial Achievement Tests and Diploma exams. Students in grades 10 and 11 will have the opportunity to be reassessed on major curricular areas from June 16th - 24th.

My best advice for all students is don't leave it till the end. Stay engaged for the next 3 weeks to set yourself up for success at the end of the year to achieve the goals you have for yourself. While there may be more flexibility this year, it does not replace daily engagement. Keep up the great work and finish strong.

Have a great weekend,

Mr. Smith hosted a slam poetry night on Thursday, May 19th which saw BCHS students share their creative words with their peers. Thank you Mr, Smith - looks like a lot of fun!
On Wednesday, May 25th, our Sports Performance classes hosted gr. 4 students from Ralph McCall for a track meet. Creating a cool opportunity for one of our elementary feeder schools while showcasing the leadership skills to work with youth made for a great day. Thanks for organizing Ms. MacEachen!
Kalyn Kodiak, a Métis herbalist, returned on Wednesday to continue working with students in our Indigenous Studies class on finalizing our blueprint for the Reconciliation Garden. This project will be completed in stages over the next 4 years and will be a place of peace, healing, reflection and reconciliation. Students participated in a smudging ceremony, asking the land for permission to create the garden and thanking the land with a gift of tobacco at the end.

To move to our next phase, we are in need of a Landscape Architect. If you or someone you know would be willing to donate your time and expertise to this special project, please reach out to Mrs. Williams at jwilliams@rockyview.ab.ca

Do You Know About  . . . . . .Dual Credit Opportunities?

RockyView has partnered with two post secondaries to offer courses that students can take that will expose them to the beginning of their career path.  The student can complete a course credit on their academic transcript while they finish high school.
-Students need to be in grade 11 or grade 12
-some courses have high school pre-requisites that must be taken first.
-some courses require a student to be on campus (you would arrange transportation and we would adjust your schedule),  but many are being offered online and we can give a school block of time to work on it.
Courses offered online with SAIT include:
Anatomy and Physiology, Health Care Professionalism, Infection Prevention and Control, Innovation and Disruption in Water Systems, Introduction to Business-Credit Management, Medical Terminology, Science of Health and Wellness
https://www.sait.ca/youth-programs/dual-credit-programs/

Courses offered online with Olds College include:
Intro to Veterinary Profession, Solving Technology Problems - Agriculture, Managing Landscapes - Horticulture, Intro to Sport Management

Students interested in applying for a Dual Credit course need to speak to their school counsellor who will provide the needed application forms and paperwork.
