From the Principal's Desk
by Ryan Reed

We were fortunate on Tuesday to host our friends from the RCMP for a presentation to our gr. 11 students on domestic violence. November is Family Violence Prevention month and as part of it, the RCMP are helping get the word out to youth on what healthy relationships look and feel like.

Throughout the presentation students were reminded of the power of their words and actions. Part of the emphasis was on the bystander affect when we see unhealthy patterns emerging in our friends relationships and what should be done.

Listening to the entire presentation allowed me to reflect on behaviours I've witnessed among students. Students often find themselves in unhealthy relationships and having the language and the tools to navigate these are so important. A powerful component of the presentation involved the sister of a victim of domestic violence and her personal walk through the tragedy of losing her sister. Students really connected with her emotions on this very personal topic.

After the presentation students were provided with the opportunity to talk about any emotions that were stirred up with professionals from the RCMP as well as our school staff. It was an emotional time for some but certainly a safe place to discuss their thoughts about what they had just heard.

It takes a village to raise a kid and this was a great example of our local partners helping get the word out to our students on the issue of domestic violence. We are thankful for the RCMP and the work they do in our city.

Have a great weekend,

Ryan
Our students were wonderful today as we honoured all of those who have sacrificed so much for our country in our annual Remembrance Day Ceremony. Dramatic performances, musical numbers, poems, and the walking in and out of colours all showed respect to the men and women who have sacrificed everything so we can enjoy the freedoms we have in Canada. Thank you to all the students under Mr. Castilglione's leadership for a meaningful ceremony.
Our Culinary students were hard at work whipping up delicious stromboli and other creative dishes this week. It is inspiring to see them take so much care in the presentation of their dishes. Well done students!
Good luck to our football team as they play in the provincial quarterfinals this weekend in Red Deer. These words have not been typed about a Bert Church Football team since 1997, 22 years ago. A magical season continues for the team as they take on provincially ranked Hunting Hills in Red Deer. The game is at 1:00 PM this Saturday. Go Chargers!
We are thrilled to have the Touring Exhibition Program of Art at the school for the next month. Our halls are lined with creative works of art inspiring our young artists!
If you don't have your Little Mermaid tickets yet, go to the following website. Our kids are hard at work, perfecting their moves, learning their lines, and working together to make it a great show!
