Principal's Message

This past week had a different rhythm to it as we reflected on our countries first National Truth and Reconciliation day. Yesterday, schools in RVS were closed to create a day of reflection for staff and students. In the days leading up to September 30th, our team at the school planned events that encouraged everyone to learn and reflect on the tragic history of residential schools.

On Monday, I shared my personal commitment with our students.

Throughout the school year, I am committing to learning more about Indigenous peoples through personal reading as well as enrolment in a Mass Open Online Course through the University of Alberta, and working to apply these learning's in my context at work and home. I am also committing to showing courage in conversation to speak up for racialized people groups and call out prejudice when I hear it and see it.

I encourage each person in our school community to reflect on ways they can influence positive change in this area in their lives. Please see below for some updates from the school!

1. Graduation Meeting
On Thursday, October 7th, we'll be hosting a virtual graduation meeting for our class of 2022. The meeting will be at 6:30 PM and will outline the graduation handbook for families. Please see the information below.

2. Sporting Event Spectators
In a typical year, we would promote home sporting events to see how many fans we could pack into the stands to support our Chargers. This year is a bit different.

For BCHS home games, we will only be permitting 2 guests/player to the gym. Drop in attendance by the community or students will not be permitted as we cannot easily control who comes and goes from the game.

Each volleyball coach has been provided with two laminated tickets that spectators should bring with them to the game to be admitted. These tickets could be used by different members of the household but it helps us keep tabs on the number of people in attendance. An administrator will be present at each game to manage the door. These tickets will also be important when our teams travel to other schools to ensure they are identifying themselves as a BCHS fan. Once seated, fans need to be distanced from people outside their household and wearing a mask.

Thank you for your cooperation in this and we look forward to getting through our volleyball season.

3. Parent Teacher Conferences

Mark your calendar for Thursday, October 28th and Thursday, November 4th as we are hosting our parent teacher conferences that night. We will be confirming the medium (online or in-person) next week but those are the confirmed dates for our conferences.

4. RVS updates school operations plan

RVS sent an email to all families today with an updated return to school plan that aligns RVS practices with that of the government. Please follow this link for the update. The biggest impact will be on families and students who have requested a mask exemption as a medical reason will have to be given. Families seeking a medical exception for the child/children from wearing a mask will have until Oct. 15, 2021, to provide their school principal with a medical note meeting all provincial requirements to be eligible for a medical mask exception at school.

Thanks to the staff and students who planned a thoughtful week, preparing moments for us all to reflect on the impact of residential schools in our country. Each day this past week, resources were shared with students and commitments were made by staff and students to stand against racism and prejudice and to learn the truth about what happened to so many Indigenous people in our country. We look forward to continuing learning throughout the year. Thank you Mrs. Cumberland, Mrs. Stachniak, and Ms. Campbell for your work throughout the week.

Our Charger athletes took to the courts and fields this week with Girls soccer and Jr. Girls volleyball. Both teams were victorious on Wednesday night. Thanks to all the kids and coaches who are making Charger athletics possible this fall!
