From the Principal's Desk
by Ryan Reed

I hope you all had a great week - we kept busy here at the school.

On Thursday night it was great to connect with our community during School Council and High School 101. School Council is a terrific opportunity for parents to have a better idea of what is going on at the school and advise school administration when asked upon. We would welcome any parents on the third Thursday of every month (check the calendar for dates) to join us at 6:30 PM in the learning commons.

After School Council we were joined by around 80 parents and students in the Learning Commons for our High School 101 evening. Our staff of learning leaders, guidance counsellors, and admin helped guide our gr. 9's through the ins and outs of the transition to high school. The evening was both informative for them as well as exciting, as they thought about the possibilities that lie ahead for their students.

Thanks to all the parents for engaging with us this week - we look forward to a great partnership this school year.

Have a great weekend
Ryan

We know the building is hot these days so a tacky tourist day on Thursday gave everyone a reason to dress like summer. Staff and students alike joined in the fun - although there were way too many socks and sandals for one school to handle!

*A note on the air conditioning: We had a cooling tower moved to the roof this summer, freeing up a good amount of space in the a room for us. This has taken them longer than anticipated. The good news is the welding is all complete and they are testing the system out, which means the air should be circulating any day now. Thank you for your patience with us as this situation is out of our control.
The girls soccer team had a busy week with 2 games against George McDougall and W.H. Croxford. The girls won handily against the Mustangs on Tuesday night and tied the Cavaliers Thursday. Thanks to Mr. Kirk for his commitment to the team and the girls for their great play! Good luck next week.

For the schedule for girls soccer, please see this link.
Our gr. 9 Math Explorations class saw the kids tackle numeracy through logic puzzles. Using creative problem solving skills enhances the students mathematical capabilities. Thanks for sharing Mrs. Wegiel!
Many of our students participated in our annual Terry Fox Run on Friday. Kids donated a toonie for Terry and supported a great cause honouring one of Canada's inspirational people. Thanks to Mr. Jones and the leadership class for organizing!
Rehearsals are underway for our Little Mermaid production. We're thrilled with Mr. Goodyear's work with our drama department and can't wait to see it!
Our Boys volleyball team was repping BCHS well at the Croxford tournament on Friday. Thanks to Mr. Ferguson for his support of the boys.
Hands on learning was everywhere in Science this week as our Biology 20 students performed a dissection of a brain and the Science 14 students did some water quality tests in East Lake. Kids connecting theory with practice helps make sense of what they're learning. Thanks for sharing Mr. Verhees!

SAT and ACT exams – 2019-2020

Which Test Should you Write?

At a glance, the two tests aren't that different. Both the ACT and SAT are nationally recognized standardized tests and common admission requirements for US schools. Catering primarily to high school juniors and seniors, each test measures students’ proficiency in various critical skill areas — such as problem solving and reading comprehension — that are necessary for college success.

Additionally, because all US colleges and universities accept scores from either the ACT or SAT, there's no advantage in taking one test over the other. This means you can apply to the same schools, regardless of which test you decide to take!

There are differences between the two tests. If you plan to write one, do some research and figure out which test would be the best one for you to write. One difference is that the SAT is 3 hours without the essay and 3 hours and 50 minutes with the essay. The ACT is a little shorter – 2 hours and 55 minutes without Writing and 3 hours and 35 minutes with Writing. This Blog site compares the differences.
