Principal's Message

Rocky View Schools - Superintendent of Schools announces leadership announcements

I hope you have enjoyed this lovely week of weather and are looking forward to your weekend. We had a busy but productive week at school. Please see below for some highlights and updates!

1. Bert Church is Amazing!

The 2021 nominees for Amazing Women in Airdrie is out and Bert Church is up for a few awards.

1. Pink Wand Amazing Workplace

BCHS has been nominated as an amazing workplace. This has never been more evident than the past few months as we have had to band together to work through the pandemic. Follow the link above and vote for BCHS to win the amazing workplace award!

2. Explosive Edge Amazing Athlete Award

Chargers know that Jinaye Shomachuk is a world class athlete and we are thrilled to see her nominated for this award. Make sure to follow the link and vote for Jinaye!

3. McKee Homes Amazing Mentor

If you have attended Bert Church or had a child go through Bert Church, their lives have probably intersected with Dorothy Smith at some point. Dorothy was our Career Counsellor for many years, pointing numerous students in the right direction. Follow the link above to support Dorothy for an Amazing Mentor!

2. COVID-19 Updates

We were informed this week that Bert Church is no longer listed by AHS as having an outbreak as we have not had a positive COVID-19 case since January. While this is encouraging news, we cannot let our guard down.

With the weather warming we are certainly seeing more numbers of kids congregating outside during lunch and after school. A few reminders as we look at the next 18 days of school prior to Spring Break.

Carpooling - best practice is for students to arrange their own ride to school, walk, or ride the bus. Carpooling puts students in close contact with each other in small space and could lead to the spread of COVID-19 between our students.

Daily Health Practices - a good reminder for all of us to make sure we are doing the daily health check and staying home if not feeling well. If those symptoms are consistent with COVID-19, booking a test and getting your results quickly is best practice. I had to do this last Thursday after feeling a headache for a few days. My test was at 8:30 in the morning and by 6:30 that evening, I had a negative result.

I know we are hearing positive news about the vaccine for the older population and adults, but until processes change for quarantine periods and schools, a positive case at school will still send the students and affected staff home for a minimum 14 day quarantine time. Thank you for your continued support and diligence in this area.

We look forward to offering this service for students who would like to use it.

6. Chill Zone

Starting on Monday, March 15th, our success coach and school counsellors will be offering a group for students who need to talk. Chill Zone will be hosted in the Learning Commons, where students can distance and follow health protocols. This space gives students a place to connect with adults and peers and help decompress or talk. Thanks to Ms. Tole and our counsellors for supporting our students in this way. Students may sign up for Chill zone next week!

Our Unified Athletes once again represented BCHS well in the bean bag toss. Congratulations Colter and Merek on your award winning toss (18 total!). Thanks to Mr. Ferguson for his work with the athletes to keep this program running through the pandemic.
Our Mechanics 30 students were thrilled to finally be able to extract their engine from their car. Next steps now included taking it apart to put it back together! Looks like fun!
Graduates, this is your last chance for 2021 Graduation Swag! Please follow the link below for more information!

We are proud of our students when they represent BCHS well in the community. Recently, the Airdrie Raiders handed out their annual hardware for the Bantam football season and 6 out of the 8 award winners were Charger students.

Congratulations to Ben, Michael, Matthia, Rain, and Tyler for your accomplishments. Looking forward to watching them wear the Blue and Gold for the next few years at Bert Church!
Staying with football, congratulations to Daishon Brown on his committment to play for the Calgary Colts next year. Daishon was a mainstay on the defensive line when he suited up for the Provincial Bronze medal Chargers in the 2019 season!
